Corrosion leading to pipeline leakage leaves parts of Tiswadi parched for 3 days

A corroded, leaking joint on the 900mm Opa-Panaji water supply line at Carambolim was the cause of the problem

PANAJI: The capital city of Panaji and surrounding areas of Ribandar, St Cruz, Merces, Taleigao and Dona Paula reeled under an acute water shortage for the third day running on Saturday, putting residents under much distress.

A corroded, leaking joint on the 900mm Opa-Panaji water supply line at Carambolim was the cause of the problem. PWD had warned of a shutdown for May 24, but the repairs took over a day-and-a-half putting residents in acute discomfort. Flooded with calls from hapless residents from their respective wards, city corporators complained bitterly that PWD engineers were either not taking their calls or repeatedly giving false deadlines and that no water tankers had been pressed into service. PWD chief engineer (I) J Borkar on Saturday afternoon insisted that the department had released water in the morning itself.

There were reports that, cashing in on the problem, some private water tanker operators were charging as much as Rs 2,000 per trip. Worse, citizens were put on waiting lists by water tanker operators and one resident said his number was 300 on the list.
