CAPpings - India - Corrosion of water pipeline, a weird excuse for draining water as per central guideline to avoid burst

Corrosion of water pipeline, a weird excuse for draining water as per central guideline to avoid burst.

Most supply pipes in Ranchi are as old as 44 years. Sealing leaks is a difficult proposition in Ranchi

Near Khelgaon Chowk, the damaged drinking water supply pipe from Rukka reservoir is spurting a fountain, sending roughly 500 litres of water down the drain every hour. At Kokar Chowk and Kantatoli Road, the situation is no different. The leaking pipes there are leading to wastage of around 1,000 litres per hour. The total wastage in Ranchi roughly works out to around 40,000 litres per day.

But engineers in the department claim that central guidelines allow a wastage of 10 per cent of the total water released per day. Given that the department releases 3.75 crore litres a day, the wastage due to leaking pipes, they claim, was negligible. What he perhaps meant was that tending to small punctures might augment water pressure through the rusted pipes and cause them to burst.
